Paraglider
pilots park on road & walk in, or walk up from Marine Drive car park above the dunes if you are likely to bottom land (its only 400m or so).... Beautiful safe soaring. Sea breeze most days, small thermals on sunny afternoons. Hang Gliders may drive to unload at Take-Off. Max One HG car only parked by hedge near T/O; if more, drop off glider and park on road. HG beach land west of rocks below T/O.This gives you a 5km x 1km sand landing area when the tide's out. Plenty of top landing for PG/HG Slope landing galore for PG. Site open all year round, but track can get boggy mid-winter. Joey flew 90km from here on thermals to Sidmouth, on SE Devon coast. |
Woolacombe Safety notes: 1.The
Nat Trust car parking restriction is important. Wardens can see
vehicles from both distant headlands –they know you are there. Max five
HG flier’s car may be parked near Take-off. HG car No.6 etc. must drive
back to park by the road as soon after dropping of his/her glider as
possible. NDHPC Woolacombe site Warden is Trevor Jordan 2.
On days when HG and PG are flying, please rig HG and park gliders by
the right (North) wall and Rear (East) wall. PG pilots bunch up your
glider when not flying and move it close to the wall. This leaves the
whole field available for HG and PG take-off and landing. Modern Hang
gliders may take a lot of room to land. Novice Parapilots may take a
lot of room to take-off, and if you are dragged over a £8,000 rigid
hang-glider you may lose your new friends!! 3.
On busy summer bank holidays remember your air-law –and if you cant
–land before you hurt someone. On the right, in the right, etc. |

Inland site with excellent XC potential. Strongly thermic, air can be EXTREMELY rough. Most pilots leave on the first thermal. Several flights from here have reached the South Devon coast. You need the quarry phone number to check blasting times. Very scenic view of N.Devon for your spectators/family. Touching Memorial at the top to Caroline Thorpe Pilots regularly glide to the south coast of devon & cornwall from here. |

Approach from Lynmouth. A Spectacular and immense
sea cliff. No bottom landing – be sure of your ability and weather.
Some slope landing for PG but not HG. Top landing for both. Amazing
heights can be gained in even light winds. Park in pub car park (good
food and beer), and carry in via church yard to cliff grass slope, or
to top of hill by radio shack. |
